STOP MOTION!

Young people aged 10-15 and living in Unst and Yell took part in an opportunity to learn how to make stop motion videos in a series of four workshops. The sessions took place in October to December 2023.

All equipment was provided for participants to enjoy working together  to create a short stop motion animation.

WHAT WE DID

Over four two hour workshop sessions the participants learned about stop motion animation and how it works before going through the production process to create a collective short animation.

Session 1: We learned about animation and how it works; discussed techniques and ideas for the various stop-motion formats (Claymation, LEGO® figures, green screen technology); invented storyboard and script ideas; and decided on the format to be used.

Session 2: We created characters and props for the animations. Participants learned about roles for the production and began learning about equipment, techniques and practising the animation process.

Session 3 and 4: We spend these sessions producing the animation, creating the different scenes, doing the stop-motion work, recording voiceovers and the sound effects-which led to...

WHAT WE USED

We used the same clay that Aardman animations use to create our characters. Participants enjoyed getting creative, working with the materials and moving their characters around during the stop-motion process.

Particpants learned how to use a Digital SLR camera to capture high quality images. The camera was be connected to a computer, and Stop Motion Studio software was used by the young people to capture the frames.

We also learned about the use of different sources of lighting such as the bright Godox SL60w to provide the right light for video, and also how other light sources can also be used.
